National Campaign for People’s Right (NCPRI) was founded in the year 1996 with the objective for a law of fundamental right to information by the few social activist, journalist, lawyers, retired civil servants etc. just after formation of SATRA we also joined the movement and advocated for the law. UN general Assembly passed a resolution in 1948 declaring Freedom of information as Fundamental human right. As much as 56 countries in the world today have this kind of law which guarantees its citizen right to information. Sweden is the earliest granting right to information to its entire citizen in 1776. As per International Transparency Index, Sweden is the least corrupted country in the world.

SATRA is associated with Right to Information movement in India. Government of India introduced the Right to Information Act (RTI) 2005. People of our country now have the right to know about the use of Govt. money i.e. peoples money. The main objective of this Act is to effective and proper implementation of the works done by the Govt. agency or Non-Govt. agency utilizing the Govt. money. This Act is a strong weapon for our people. But people have to play their part to look after the works done with the Govt. money by Govt. or Non-Govt. agency. But most of the people are not aware about the RTI Act. So it is most important to take up some measures for the purpose of awakening the people and to make them aware regarding this obliging Act.

The North East Network (NEN), Guwahati is guiding SATRA in various projects and campaign since the inception of the organization. Through NEN SATRA has started the campaign of RTI awareness in the area. The SATRA staff and the members were trained by NEN on the issue. Later the trained team of SATRA conducted various campaign and awareness throughout various places of Darrang district of Assam. SATRA submitted application at Food and Civil Supply Dept. and Block Development authority seeking information under this Act and responded well.

To mobilize the Act and to make aware the people more SATRA performed “Street Play” not only in Darrang district but also in various places of Assam like Dispur, Panbazar, Adabari of Guwahati. The movement is still going on in the area and more and more people are being aware through SATRA.
