Formation & Early days

In 2002, SATRA (Social Action For Appropriate Transformation And Advancement in Rural Areas) came into existence through the initiative of Mrs. Jyoti Prava Bora and various social activists in Assam. The organization was officially named during a gathering at Mrs. Bora's residence on 27th February 2002. Dr. Dinesh Baishya, the former principal of B. Borooah College in Guwahati, played a pivotal role in christening it. SATRA's mission, "People for Development, Development for People," reflected its commitment to enhancing society's well-being.

Leadership Transition and Growth

Mrs. Jyoti Prava Bora, the founding chief functionary, launched SATRA's operations from its headquarters in Sipajhar. However, after a year, in 2003, she joined a government job, leading to the election of Mr. Nani Kumar Saikia as the Executive Director in January 2004. Mr. Saikia envisioned a cadre of young individuals dedicated to social welfare, guiding and motivating them towards community development.

Early Challenges and Volunteer Efforts

During its initial phase, SATRA faced challenges in securing funds due to its nascent status. Undeterred, a passionate group of volunteers, including Biplab Saharia, Sanjib Sarma, Debeswar Medhi,Jagadish Nath,Moni Bora,Sumitra barman and others, worked tirelessly for over two years. Their dedication laid the foundation for SATRA's credibility as a prominent NGO in Darrang district.

Financial Support and Development Initiatives

SATRA's breakthrough came with support from RGVN (Rastriya Grameen Vikash Nidhi), enabling the organization to venture into economic development through microfinance. The volunteer team's initial voluntary work evolved into the organization's forte, providing insights into community needs and fostering a culture of dedication and responsibility.

Organisational Expansion and Core Team

As SATRA gained recognition as an esteemed NGO, national and international organizations started providing grants and funds. Under Mr. Nani Kumar Saikia's leadership, SATRA expanded its team, with 74 staff members currently working across various projects. A distinguished group, including Dr. Prasanna Nath, Mr. Kamal Bhatta, Santanu Saikia, Dr. Dinesh bashya, Dr. Bazrul Islam and others, serves on the board, offering crucial guidance and support time to time.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, SATRA aims to expand its activities with support from well-wishers, funding, and donor agencies, focusing on maximum development in its operational areas. The organization remains dedicated to its founding principles of "People for Development, Development for People."
